Should your Mechanic be Ase Certified – Yes
The main reason you should only ASE certified mechanics, they will have more up to date reports on what they are repairing. A mechanic that always looks for a better way to repair your auto will give you a better job. I was a mechanic for almost forty years and I had to do research at least once a year. Some of those years I had to be trained more because of the new cars and trucks made every year. If a mechanic has to spend extra time to find what is wrong with your car, that repair job will cost you more. When a mechanic can not do a repair job based the time given by the job book, they will have to make their time up on another job. Sometimes that extra time will be added to your bill.
If a ASE mechanic has been trained for each job they do. they will know if another part caused the part they have repaired to go bad. I am not telling you that a mechanic without being certified is not a good mechanic. There are a lot of good mechanics that are not ASE certified and they do good work. There is not any way all mechanics can repair every thing without some extra training. A ASE mechanic will get a update on all troubles found by the manufactures so they will not have to guess what may be bad. A lot of garages without the new updates will have to add the extra time to your bill. I know a lot of mechanics who just work on the same stuff all the time. Some of them are not ASE certified and they do great work. This is alright unless what they are working with has not been updated with new way which will change how they do the repair job.
Any time a problem is found that will require a recall on a car or a truck, If a non certified mechanic does not hear about the recall, it could lead to other problems. Most factory trained mechanics will have the support of the manufacture who make the car or truck they are working on. This is real important if the manufacture has to replace the complete vehicle based on a certain amount of time to do the replacement. I have heard of cases where there was a recall and the owners mechanic did not know about it. When the owner heard about the recall and it was too late they had to pay for the repair bill. Most of the time after something like that happens the car is always repaired by a ASE certified mechanic. When a car repair place puts a sign in front of their business stating that their mechanics are ASE certified that tell a customer that their car will be repaired right.
