The world of Cosmetology is a rewarding and fascinating place. In many states, a cosmetology license includes nails, skin and make-up. So is a Cosmetology license right for you?

Cosmetology school is not what many people have a pre-conceived notion about. It is not "the easy way out" or "Not a real college". Cosmetology school requires many hours of theory, anatomy, basic chemistry, physiology, trichology(study of hair), infection control and a knowledge of bacteria and pathogens. It is not all fun and games, perms and roller sets. It is hard work and dedication. Most states require 1200 to 1500 hours in a state board approved school, being taught by licensed Cosmetology teachers. If you decide to go to school full time, usually 35 hours a week, you can be done with your requirements in 11 months. That is a huge advantage over traditional college, which requires a 2 year or 4 year time commitment. By the time you graduate, you will be ready to face the world in a rewarding new career. Most cosmetology schools are accredited, which means you can apply for financial aid, Pell grants, student loans and more. And like a traditional college, you have a 6 month grace period after your graduation to find a job and to start the repayment of your loans.

Some benefits of a cosmetology License:

Cosmetology is practically a recession-proof industry. If you have a cosmetology license, you can get a job. If you are a licensed cosmetologist and do not have a job, then it is because you do not want one. No matter how slow the economy gets, people will ALWAYS pay to have their hair cut. There are always salons and spas looking for new stylists and booth rentals. According to NACCAS (National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences), the cosmetology industry is in constant demand for trained cosmetologists due to the increased growth of salons.

Cosmetologists can set their own hours, and in many cases, their own pricing. How much you earn is only limited by how much you want to work. The average salary for a full time licensed cosmetologist is $30,000-50,000 and by 2015 a full time cosmetologist is expected to earn $44,000.

There are a Variety of options for a cosmetologist. You don't have to work in a salon. You can also work in hotels, spas, vacation resorts, cruise ships and more. You can work with a variety of people, such as photographers, bridal parties, actors the media and more.

So, is a cosmetology license right for you? Ask yourself these questions:

Am I a creative person? Do I enjoy being around people? Am I good at meeting new people and striking up conversations and friendships? Am I a good listener? Can I stand for long periods of time? Do I like to help others? Do I like to help others feel good about themselves? Am I serious about making good money? Do I have an open mind and am I able to learn new things? Am I ready to change my life for the better?

If you have the desire then your school will teach you what you need to know. Just believe in yourself and know that a cosmetology license can open doors for you that you never thought existed. You can have a rewarding and fulfilling career within a year and wake up every morning knowing that you have a job you love.
