When was the last time you noticed a security guard? You probably see them every day wherever you go, but you probably don’t really pay attention to them. If you have a tendency to not pay attention to security guards, don’t worry, they probably won’t mind. In fact, blending into the background and allowing people to go about their lives while feeling comfortable is a big part of being a security guard. They probably don’t get the type of respect they deserve but they do their jobs anyways without needing your thanks. But imagine if there were no security guards, the amount of theft and property damage would be incredible and you would definitely notice that.
When most people think of security guards, the image that probably comes to mind is the uniformed guards who patrol the local mall, or the night guards who watch over buildings. But there are a great number of security guards who do different things at different types of locations. There are guards who monitor security cameras that you may never see in person. There are also those responsible for maintaining order at gates where proper credentials are needed for entry. And don’t forget about the guards who guard the lobbies of the apartment buildings and condo complexes in which you might live. There is also a high demand for security during special events and within public places with lots of traffic such as casinos and stadiums. When it comes down to it, there are lots of positions that are available and all are essential in keeping people safe.
Becoming a security guard is not easy, nor is it for everyone. The job is quite demanding and therefore; so are the qualifications as not everyone can just pick up a flashlight and become a guard. In order to be a security guard, you need to have a good sense of perception and general awareness. You have to be dedicated as you can be assigned an area with little to no activity and the temptation to stray or wander can be great. A guard needs to be a good communicator who can negotiate with the general public. They must also have a certain level of written and spoken English in order to do their jobs properly. A security guard’s main function is to observe and report, and all of these skills will allow a guard to do just that. Therefore most guards require a good level ofsecurity guard trainingto do their jobs well.
Evidently,training for a security guardis not easy, and it’s not a breeze to become one. But those who do are engaging in an occupation that is both helpful and essential. You may not notice your local security guard, but without knowing it – you’re probably really glad that they are there.
