Safety Tips for Real Estate Agents
Many people do not think of being a real estate agent as a particularly dangerous job, and it is not. Problems can occur, however, and there are certain precautions you will want to take as a real estate agent in order to protect yourself. The following are safety tips for real estate agents.
Listen to your instincts
Let’s say you are a female real estate agent and you have a male client show up. Something about him really bothers you, but you will need to go alone with him into a home in order to show it to him. If your instincts are truly shouting danger, then you should avoid this situation. Find someone who can go with you to show him the home. Even if you think he is probably okay, you never know. If red flags are going off in your mind, they could be doing so for a reason, and you will always want to be careful. If you go alone with him into an empty house, you are fairly stuck should he decide to try something. You can give any excuse you want for the second person’s presence, but it will be worth it to you to feel comfortable. Some women also carry around some sort of pepper spray to protect themselves.
Be careful when driving
Many real estate agents drive their clients around. You may be talking to your client about the house. You will want to be careful when doing this that you do not get so distracted that you get into an accident. When you are driving, that is number one. Of course, it is okay to have a conversation, but be careful about letting it get to the point in which you have difficulty concentrating.
Make sure others know where you are and whom you are with when showing homes
You might want to give someone else an idea of where you will be and with whom. It could be a co-worker, a family member, a friend, the company, etc. You want someone to know so that if there is a problem they will know where to look and whom to contact.
Be careful when in bad areas
If you need to visit a bad area to show a home then take the proper precautions. Do not wear flashy jewelry. Do not dawdle. In this situation, you might also want to consider bringing someone along.
