Resume Tips for Freelance Writers
Some freelance jobs actually require a resume. Many freelance writers are flummoxed by this because they may have become accustomed to either bidding for jobs or simply submitting a writing sample attached to a concise email of why the sample is being sent. While many freelance clients do not request a resume some of them do. Clients that request a freelancer’s resume are also likely to be the ones with a larger budget or a longer term project, so they don’t mind pausing a bit to find out a bit more about the person they are considering for the job.
There is no need for freelancer writers to be put off by a request for a resume, after all, you write for a living! Take a look at the suggested format below to see just how easily you can put together a writer’s resume.
State Your Objective
Just as in an offline resume, your online writer’s resume should have an objective. This lets your client know what you expect to bring to the project as well as what you think you will get out of it. It should be short, no more than two or three lines.
Name Your Skill
Some writers specialize in web copy or SEO techniques others are able to write using AP style. Whatever your skill you should not be shy about talking it up a bit.
Provide Links to Sample Articles
This is where you can give the client some of your previously written articles to read. You can use content that you have submitted to article directories or even paid sites as writing samples. If you have had previously published articles though it would be great to list them here as well along with where and when the work was first posted.
Show Off Your Achievements
If you have won any contests or awards or achieved any notable mention online or off you can mention it here. This is your time to shine so don’t leave anything out.
List Your Education and Pre-Freelancer Experience
You may think that the client is not interested in what you did before you moved into freelancing or what your qualifications are but they may expect to see this on your resume. In any event it will not hurt to include it and it will give them a bit more insight into what you are capable of doing. There is no need to go into too much detail, a simple list of job titles and qualifications will be sufficient.
Creating a resume if you are a freelance writer might seem confusing, but once you get started you’ll find that what you need to include will start to become more obvious.
