Relationship between Loyalty and Career Advancement

In many positions across a plethora of fields, loyalty is related to career advancement.  This is often a positive relationship for possessing such a trait can propel you far in your career goals.  Consider the following points.

If a recruiter believes that you are loyal, they may be more likely to hire you

When hiring, of course someone is going to look for someone who is loyal.  Someone who is loyal is often more dedicated to the job, and will often do a better job.  They will be less likely to do something unscrupulous such as sell company secrets.  They will be less likely to abandon you.  You may therefore help to advance in your career by getting more of the jobs that you interview for if you can convince them that you do have this characteristic.

When you prove yourself to be loyal, your boss may promote you

Bosses like employees who are loyal.  Some people look specifically for this quality when looking to promote.  They want someone that they can trust and whom they think has the company's best interests at heart, which loyalty is related to.  You career may go further along as you get the promotions that you want.  You may also be rewarded with raises for your loyal behavior.

You may earn display less behavior that could get you into trouble at your job and halt your career advancement

When people are not loyal to a job, they may end up doing something that could be detrimental for their career advancement.  For instance, let's say that you are tempted by a "quick buck" at a competing company.  If someone finds out, you might be in trouble.

The downside of loyalty

In general loyalty is good for your career advancement, however there are cases in which this is not the case.  If you are staying with a job that is really bad for you and does not treat you well out of loyalty, then you can actually hinder yourself.  You want to be loyal, but it should be to a reasonable point.  If that loyalty is not reciprocal, for instance, then you might want to find a company that can provide this.

Loyalty is an important characteristic to possess when looking to advance in your career.  It can help you obtain jobs, get promoted and advance in general in your career.
