Reasons why some College Students don’t want Parttime Jobs

A part time job is a great way for college students to help cover their tuition and get some extra spending money for the weekends. Even with this in mind, many college students don't want part time jobs.

I have worked part time during all four years of college and in my most recent job, I have seen many students come and go. Based on their reasons for quitting, I think I've figured out why students just don't want to work.

The biggest problem is that many students don't have the basic personal responsibility to hold a job. Some of them will complain about the hours they have to work, which seems unfair to their social life. One of my co-workers complained that he doesn't get enough of a social life. He ended up quitting the job. It's a shame that at college age, kids still don't understand that to have a job, you have to sacrifice a little bit of fun; or at least make other time for it in your schedule. Many kids are unwilling to make this change; especially if their sole focus is to party as much as possible in college.

Another problem is the lack of time management. Some students have trouble fitting a part time job into their school schedule. Most college kids have anywhere from 15-18 credits a semester; or 5-7 classes. It's understandable that everyone is busy, but some kids are either unwilling to work a job into it or don't know the proper way. They will blame a job for the reason why they don't devote enough time to their studies.

What they should do is fully understand their course requirements and look for an employer who will give them a fairly consistent schedule. Many employers understand the demands of college classes, contrary to what some students believe. This makes it easier to plan when you can do homework, have a job, and still have time to relax.

Students sometimes want the paycheck, but don't want to do the work to get it. They will go to work and complete the bare minimum of what they are expected to do. Sometimes they will do nothing at all. They may also show up late or call off frequently for invalid reasons. Either way, this creates a lot of hassle for those that are coming in on time and completing their required duties or more than what is required. This goes back to a lack of personal responsibility. Students simply lack a good work ethic.

I believe that the reasons why students don't want jobs are based on their own reasoning that they conclude without any research or effort to search for a job. All of these things can be changed, but often times, the student will not work to change them. This is why so many college students don't want jobs during what are supposed to be the "best years of their lives".
