There are many ways to assess a person’s worth. One of these is to look at the quality of the work that is performed. An individual’s work, the way that it is done, and the results that are produced, are a direct indicator of the type of person that worker is. Work should not be done frivolously, but with purpose and clear, focused intent. Why is it so important to take pride in your work?

Workis activity that leads to either the production of a product or the completion of a task. Whether work is paid or unpaid, it involves effort that leads to the accomplishment of a task. The approach that you take to work is a key way that others evaluate you. Employees who fail to put the necessary focus, interest and energy into their work are people who cannot be trusted with everyday life activities.

Work is a fundamental component of life and everyone must do a certain amount of work in order to maintain a necessary lifestyle. If you look at work as merely a means to an end, others will assume that this is how you view every interaction in your life. Failure to take work seriously reflects individuals who don’t respect themselves or others.

Taking pride in your work leads to every detail being completed in a thorough manner. Those who lack such pride will have a tendency to cut corners in order to finish the task as quickly as possible. The goal of individuals who lack pride in their  work is to merely finish with as little effort exerted as possible. As a result, the work accomplished will likely be at or below standard and lack that kind of original thinking that comes about from workers who take pride in what they do. Taking pride in one’s work involves taking the time to look for ways to do something better and in a more original way. It involves doing something not just to accomplish a task, but for the love of the work. Each moment spent by workers taking pride in their work is focused on doing the best job possible. In contrast, individuals who lack such pride are focused merely on getting the job done so that they can move on to something that truly is of interest.

If you take pride in your work, you are showing respect for the person who employs you. While not all work is done at the direction of others, that which is done under such circumstances should be done to the best of your ability in deference to the person who requested it. Pride in a job well done communicates to superiors that they are working with persons of value and that their request is one that is honored. There is a commitment involved in taking on a task for another and doing it to the best of your ability, reflects that you are a person of honor.

Taking on a task and doing it well is part of the process by which you establish your reputation in society. Nothing will more quickly ruin your reputation than committing to accepting a task and then not giving your best to accomplish it. Work is not done merely for your own accomplishments, but it is done within a social structure in which you make your mark and where you set the bar for the perceptions of others. Such pride in work is a combination of how you perceive your worth and how that perception is perpetuated through the social structure. Taking pride in one’s work is absolutely essential both for the individual and for the society as a whole. Such pride reflects an individual who is confident in what can be done and who is willing to demonstrate the necessary abilities before others.

Taking pride in your work results in better work, more creative work and work that reflects respect for those you work for. The entire social structure is better when individuals take pride in their work and the relationships among its members are closer, stronger and healthier for all as a result.
