Reasons to Send thank you Cards to an Interviewer
"That's Remarkable!" Your future employer might remark after receiving your thank you card. They'll probably scan it for over the top butt kissing or shake the envelope to make sure their isn't anything they should be wary of.. In the end, they will decide it's safe and that although it is a bit unusual in this era, that it was very nice of you to send a thank you card, even if the job wasn't securely yours yet.
Why You Should Do it:
Reason #1) It's Unusual
When our parents and grandparents were young, thank you notes were a requirement to just about every person we interacted with.
"That nice clerk at the store helped us out with the groceries, he needs a thank you note!"
They sent thank you notes to their hair dressers, mechanics, police department, the mail man, the weird guy on the street corner. There were no second thoughts about and no devious plans involved. Everyone got thank you cards, holiday cards, birthday cards. I've even read some regular cards that my mother still sends and receives with a gal that she hardly knows. Somehow one of them sent a thank you card for some random time they met in passing and they have continued to do so every since. :)
You will find that in this new millennium though that there aren't many adults or kids who still send thank you cards. You might be lucky to get a semi sincere text message that says, "Tanks 4 da presents!". Some are even lucky enough that they might get an email with two or three lines in it from an old friend or someone they helped out, but true thank you notes, letters, cards or even phone calls are a rare and curious wonder in these times.
So when you get out that pen and sign that humorous yet sincere card that you spent forever picking out at the store, that card is going to reach the desk of your recent interviewer/future employer and they are likely to be astonished. There might be a few long time employees that send them cards or thank yous, but it is rare when someone who hasn't even secured the job does it.
Reason #2) To Secure Consideration
In this world their are very few guarantee's. Not to mention, you really should send one in the hopes that you will actually get the job. You should send it to thank them sincerely and if it secures the job for you, that should be a surprising bonus.
The reason I suggest it this way, is because it becomes a good deed that you do, just because you like to.
Now... This doesn't mean you can't send a card to a job you really really want to get, just don't bank everything on the card all by itself.
No, you should send the card because you sincerely want to thank them for giving you the opportunity to come and chat with them. It is likely that they end up interviewing hundreds of candidates all day long, while doing their other jobs and not likely getting the appreciation they deserve.
When they receive your thank you card, it might just be the one thing that lifts their spirits just enough so that you stay on their mind. Now, don't send your mind into the gutter, a man or woman can send a man or woman employer a thank you card. You're not sending a card in hopes to get them into bed and work your way up the ladder. At least not yet I hope, slow down! :)
There are plenty of other reason to send Thank You Cards, of course. Yet those reasons are ones you may choose as you write your thank you cards. Just make sure to be sincere, whether you believe it or not, you leave an emotional or energy impression on gifts and sentiments sent to other people and if you just send it with selfish intentions, it's like that you not find to much joy in it.
With that in mind, I will always suggest a card with some humor in it. Not to unprofessional and definitely not anything that could be found offensive by race, religion, political stance or disability. Then make sure that though it is funny, it says something they are likely to be able to relate to, something that you could imagine a lot of people relating to will higher your odds of hitting home.
