Reasons not to Shun Employees in the Workplace

From 3arf

To shun co-workers in a business environment may be extremely detrimental to your career. Not only that it is, on a personal level, just not the right and just route to follow. Co-workers and management could possibly view you as:

Someone Who is Not a Team Player

Failing to accept someone in your group, whether it be because of individual differences or an intuitive sense of dislike, can form an unattractive picture of you as someone who is not a team player.  Friendship is not a requirement in the workplace - working together toward a common goal is.  You need to put your personal opinions aside and focus on what is important - getting the job done and getting it done right.

A Judgmental Individual

Shunning an employee in your workplace can be viewed as childish and judgmental behavior.  Until you have walked a few miles in another person's shoes, you do not have the right to assess or isolate that person.  Focus on the job at hand and including that person as an integral link in the chain is what will make your workday productive and stress free.

A Narrow-Minded Employee

When you single out someone you work with for whatever reason you may have, you may create a picture of yourself as a petty, single-minded and inflexible individual.  Management always recognizes these qualities for exactly what they are and you may be unconsciously eliminating or decreasing your own opportunities for advancement by your own immature behavior.  Instead of shunning that person, take him under your wing and show him the ropes and learn more about his skill levels and perceptions of what may work better in your work environment.

It takes all kinds to form an effective organization.  Just because someone may not fit your view of the perfect employee or co-worker, does not mean that they are not an integral part of the business. They may have talents or skills that you and others in the group may not be in possession of and, without their expertise, the end result may not be as clearly defined or effective.

Always remember that when you may feel like shunning someone you work with, just tell yourself that he or she is a person too and is just as important and essential as the other employees you work with.
