Proper Attire for Job Seekers

From 3arf

You have been out running errands and see that rare "help wanted" sign in a local shop window.  What you need to think about is how to resist the urge to drop in and grab an application. While you might think you can just stop and pick up an application, you might want to hesitate a moment and consider what you are wearing.  If you are in sweatpants, and a sweatshirt that was passed down from your older brother and grubby sneakers resist the urge to stop.  If you think "this will be fine, I am only going to pick up an application, it will not matter", think again.  You cannot make a good first impression when looking to apply for a job dressed like you just left the gym.

What should I wear?

The first thing that you should keep in mind when looking to apply for a job is that there is a very good chance you may be interviewed on the spot. Because of this, it is typically wiser to appear ready for an interview.  Some of this of course, depends on the type of work that you are applying for.

Reception/Executive Assistant - This is a "front facing" position and one that is high visibility.  Women applying for this position should wear a tailored suit (pants or skirt), blouse and appropriate shoes. Avoid very high heels and too much makeup. Men should make sure that they are wearing an appropriate suit and a tie that is not brightly colored. The best color choices for these types of positions are navy or black for suits and white blouses or shirts.

Sales positions - When you are looking to apply for a sales job, you have the opportunity to be a bit more flamboyant. This does not mean you should dress as if you were going out for an evening of dining and dancing. Since traditionally sales positions are competitive and require you to be aggressive, there is an opportunity to be a bit more expressive.  While you should still wear a suit when you are looking to apply for a sales job, you may elect for a colored blouse, a red tie or other brightly colored accessory.  Women applying for a sales job may consider wearing a red blouse for instance where you would not consider one for a reception job. Men may also consider a red tie that would be inappropriate for an administrative position.

Factory/Warehouse - Even if you are looking to apply for a job in a factory or warehouse, you should avoid showing up in jeans and a sweatshirt or t-shirt.  If you are looking to apply for a factory or warehouse position, you should wear casual slacks and a polo shirt or button down shirt. This attire would be appropriate for both men and women. Depending on the job you are looking to apply for, a sensible pair of oxfords or leather sneakers may also be appropriate.

The most important thing to remember aboutwhat you should wear when looking to apply to a jobis it is never appropriate to look your worst. Be well groomed, never wear sweats or jeans.   This is your chance to make a great impression.  Do not let your attire torpedo your opportunity to get the job you are applying to.
