On Avoiding Modeling Scams
Many young men and women dream of becoming models. The life of a model seems glamorous - traveling the world and acquiring fame and fortune. However, don't let your passion for your dreams blind you into falling for a scam.
If someone approaches you and claims that they could make you a model, BEWARE. It is true that some models were discovered as they went about their daily lives, in places like shopping malls and nightclubs. However, the vast majority of working models had to work hard and face rejection many times in order to enjoy any success.
There are many, many scam artists out there and they pray on young men and women so desperate to achieve their dreams that they don't take the time to do the proper research. If anyone asks for money in exchange for helping you to become a model, it's probably a scam. Bogus model "scouts" will try to get you to pay for modeling classes or photo shoots, promising high-paying jobs as a result. Be suspicious if a company demands an up-front fee to be your agent or if they only accept payment in the form of cash or money orders.
Avoiding modeling scams means taking your time and doing your research. It also means thinking rationally - don't let flattery get the best of you. Always get everything in writing and NEVER sign any document without reading it over carefully first. This means taking a copy home to read over and discuss with someone you trust if necessary. As part of your research, ask for the names and contact information of models who have successfully secured work recently with the help of the company in question. Also contact the Better Business Bureau or consumer protection agency to see if there are any unresolved complaints on file involving the company.
