Oil Replacing Car Oil Filter
It is a good idea for the home mechanic to learn how to replace a car’s oil filter. The process is not difficult to complete. What is an oil filter? The oil filter is shaped like a 12-ounce soda can and it holds oil when the car is not running. It also stops larger particles and dirt from entering the engine. To successfully do the job, the home auto mechanic willneed a few tools and a new oil filter.
First, the home mechanic will need a drain pan, rubber gloves, old rags, and a oil filter wrench. The oil filter should be changed every3,000 miles or every three monthsor whichever comes first. Lift the car slightly with a jacking device and block the wheels to make sure the car does not move. Do not work on the car if the engine is hot. Wait until the engine is cool. Get under the car and locate the engine’s oil filter. The filter is normally located at the lower part of the engine. A smart mechanic willchange the oil and the oil filterat the same time. It does not make sense to place dirty oil in a new filter.
First, locate the drain plug. The plug may a bolt that is inserted into the oil pan. Place the empty drain pan under the drain plug. Unscrew or remove the drain plug and let all the oil flow down into the drain pan. Clean the drain plug area with a rag and replace the drain plug or bolt. Position the drain pan under the oil filter. Loosen the oil filter with the oil filter wrench.
Next, unscrew the oil filter completely and place it in the oil pan. Look at the new oil filter and the old oil filter and make sure they are the same. Read the product numbers on the package and the oil filter to compare. Clean the area where the new oil filter will be placed on the engine with a rag. Make sure the old oil filter gasket is removed completely from the engine.
Finally, place a small amount of oil on the new oil filter gasket. Pour a small portion of oil into the new oil filter from an oil container. Attach the new oil filter back on the engine block. Do not over tighten the oil filter. Remove the tools and the oil pan from under the engine. Pour about three quarts of oil into the engine. The job is completed. Give the oil a few minutes to drain into the oil pan and check for leaks.
