Nonprofits and the Myth of Lower Salaries
One of the things I have learned about non-profit entities is that they can be pretty lucrative. Their wages are just as competitive as for profit entities. Like numerous businesses, non-profit organizations such as advocacy groups, charities, and political organizations are indeed looking for people with very strong backgrounds. Plus they're willing to pay pretty good wages to keep those people. The people working for those non-profit groups are people just like you and me. We have to eat, we have to pay rent, we have to pay for utilities, we need to pay for gas, and spend money on all sorts of other necessities.
That's one way to debunk of the myth of working for a non-profit for a lower wage. Keep in mind that non-profit entities get all sorts of funding. Also, the non-profit entities aren't taxable entities either. You only pay taxes unless you do something that justifies losing your non-profit status. These non-profit groups get funding from various places such as the government and donations. If a non-profit manages to function for a long time, you can bet that people working there can get paid very well.
Most of the money collected goes towards the cause. But you can't give it all to the cause. You need to keep some to maintain the non-profit. Such as paying for expenses for food, airfare, lodging, building rent, and other business related expenses. A non-profit still has to operate like a business in a sense in order to survive. If the non-profit dies out, then there wouldn't be anymore funds to pour out to whatever causes they support.
I have friends that have very good positions in some political advocacy groups around the Washington DC Metropolitan area. They're highly educated individuals that know what they're doing. That's another debunking on that myth. So, when you think non-profit, don't think about lower salaries.
I would rather work for a non-profit than a private business. It would be far more satisfying at the same time make a pretty decent living. Most importantly, my knowledge, experience, and skills will be far better utilized.
Some notable examples of these non-profits is the Clinton World AIDS Foundation, NAACP, Anti-Defamation League, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, National Breast Cancer Organization, and many more. Those people get paid very well. And they should because of the time they contributed to the various causes.
