Motivation through Frequent Breaks

From 3arf

Sitting at your desk watching the computer screen, the time seems to drag on.  You are waiting for your next ten-minute break after four straight hours of data entry.  Is this the best way to be productive?  The answer is no.

The optional and more productive way to break up any workday is to take frequent breaks.  Clear your head and give yourself time to process the information you have been drowning yourself in.   Take time to get a drink, or small snack or even stand up and stretch,

Each of these actions can enhance your job performance and make you a more productive employee.  Productivity is one of the keys in advancing in any industry.  Choosing to take frequent breaks can ensure you are refreshed and focused.

Here are three ways to take a frequent break:

Stretch - Get up and stretch.  It circulates your blood flow and causes better brain function.

Walk - Walk it off.  If your legs are tired from sitting in the same position imagine what your mind must be going through.

Nutrition - Eat, drink or snack.  Replenish those lost calories being burned by repetitive routines of daily work.

These small steps can lead to a more enhanced performance.  The job doesn’t have to be tedious if you simply apply the fundamentals of frequent breaks.  The breaks help relieve stress and tension as well as stress brought on by routine.

After frequent breaks your work becomes less mundane and more enjoyable.  Proving that even the most stressful jobs can become more tolerable through the choice of taking time to regroup and reflect.  Many businesses find that production workers on 4-hour shifts with 10-minute breaks have higher turnover than those that have 2-hour shifts with 5-minute breaks.

In conclusion productivity can be enhanced through simple changes in time management.   It’s proven even in those revolving around breaks.  The next time you decide to take a break, try taking more frequent breaks and see if your productivity increases.

For those businesses that have yet to implement the frequent-break scenario - put in a request, have them take a survey or just record the productivity of those who do and those who don’t participate.  The work output could increase enough that it becomes a new way to motivate staff.

Motivation is the one aspect that benefits company moral and company production.  Knowing you had a hand in implementing it in your company would be yet another great motivation.
