Modern Methods of Selling Chametz

From 3arf

Chametz includes bread, grains and left over products which are not consumed on the Jewish holiday of Passover. The Jewish law prohibits a rabbi from either consuming or having it in his/her ownership. The usual practice for selling chametz is called Mechirah . The traditional method includes that the rabbi signs a contract with each of his congregants making him an agent for selling the chametz. The chametz is sold to a non-Jew.

One of the modern methods of selling chametz is by selling it online. There are a couple of websites through which one can dispose of the chametz before the holiday of Passover. However the right way of selling cahmetz online is finding the authorized and permits holder website that is working under the principals defined by the Torah and Rabbinic Law whether it be chametz mixture or any other kind of chametz.

The chametz is taken from you and sold through different agents online who follows the bill of sale while making a transaction making it an objection free transaction under both civil laws and the laws of Torah.

Another way of selling the extra Chametz is by writing a bill of sale in this way you are establishing the fact that the chametz no longer belongs to you. However you have to take it out of your house by sending it to a non Jew before the Passover is finishes.

A Jew must not touch it all this while as it is prohibited to eat the sold chametz after the Passover. The bill should state the price and selling note. The payment can be in money form or any other way of payment. However the payment must be made by a certain time the bill should state and if the payment is not made by that time the chametz will no longer be the buyer’s property. So during the Passover the chametz will be the property of the non Jew. The chametzis thought to be sold all the while the payment is due. It must be intended as sold so that it is owned back by the original owner once the buyer is unable to make the payment. In case the payment is made, the chametz can be possessed by the original owner as it is no longer his property and therefore legal for him to have it.

This process is mostly done through rabbinical court offices who act as the seller’s agent. Not only the rabbinical agent does that but also stores it at anon Jew place which is another important thing to be taken care of.
