Mercedes C230 Kompressor
The 1998 Mercedes C230 Kompressor is a comfortable (and very affordable automobile). Given a nice tint, some new rims, and touch-ups here and there, this car could look great to stroll in. This car is the first generation C-Class ever constructed by the German innovator Mercedes Benz, from the 1993 model year up until 2000. That being said, its design theme is arguably the same as its predecessor (the Mercedes 190-Series) that ran from 1982 to 1993. If you are willing to deal with a much "outdated"-styled car, and desire comfort in your ride, this compact sedan will suit you perfect.
Many drivers, as well as this author, experienced small difficulties with the transmission. Quirks with the electrical system are common, but so is it with any German car (especially Mercedes-Benz or BMW). The engine, electrical system, and transmission all have their little problems, but do not stack up to the positives of the vehicle. If the car is taken car of: meaning oil changes, kept clean, updating CD player, and little things here-and-there; the vehicle will be a dream. For now, back to the "under the hood" portion of this review, let's talk about the engine. Many people said they experienced troubles when starting the engine, and that it will drive slow when started up. This is to be expected out of any aging car, to include the 1998 C-Class. If the reader is interested in one, it is absolutely necessary to make sure the car was in good hands. This car could be a headache waiting to happen if all the usual electrical bugs were not taken care of.
The design has essentially been used for nearly twenty years. Now, this may not necessarily mean it is outdated, but the car does resemble its 1980's styled exterior. The C-Class' predecessor, the 190-Series, was made for more than a decade, and is clearly the inspiration behind the C230. The interior, on the other hand, has been graciously updated and is luxurious to the touch. You will be crammed with space limitations, but the C230 isn't designed to be a full-sized sedan, its supposed to be the most comfortable, affordable ride out there.
On to the ride, which is something Mercedes is no slouch in. Because of its original, luxury suspension, the C-Class is designed to absorb shocks in the road and handle like a pro. It is an amazing car that focuses on giving the driver an excellent ride, without breaking the bank. According to Kelley Blue Book, a 1998 C230 with around 150,000 miles on it (in excellent condition) will cost around $5,500. If you manage to find one with about 100,000 on it, you are looking at another grand down ($6,500). So, if you are interested in an inexpensive vehicle to take you around town on your daily routine, consider the 1998 C230. It's ride is so comfortable you will look forward to driving it to work. As with any car, be sure to check previous history to ensure the Mercedes has no electrical problems.
