Mechanic Car Repair – Local
There are pros and cons to both sides. The best choice will be up to the individual. This individual chooses the local mechanic. I may be biased as my husband is the local mechanic. He worked many years at gas stations then dealerships. He has left the corporate world of auto repair to work in our garage at home.
The reasons he has chosen to do this are:
1) Dealers/private shops expect the mechanic to fib regarding repairs (i.e. something is under warranty or recall but we won't tell the customer). Dishonesty is not an option.2) Dealers/private shops mostly work on commission. Mechanics do not get paid to check the car out normally so they find something to make it worth their while. Most times no one asks to see the old part.3) There is no quality control, customers are sometimes charged for repairs not performed unannounced to anyone at the dealer.4) Dealers/private shops tend to remove and replace parts, sometimes a part can be repaired for minimal costs instead. The art of repairing is becoming lost.5) He is accountable for his work and does not have to worry about shop politics.6) Dealers have a lot of overhead and charge exuberate prices.7) Dealers often have a long wait to get cars returned to customers. Most times the local mechanic works on one car at a time, not lining them up in the driveway to wait their turn.
Reasons why our customers stay with us:
1) Local mechanic is trustworthy, plus the customer knows where he lives.2) Local mechanic can charge lower prices due to less overhead.3) Local mechanic wants repeat business, ensuring honesty and backing up repairs.4) Local mechanic can more times then not, repair the car the same day.5) Local mechanic will prioritize the items needing repair, telling the customer which ones are needed now, due to safety and which ones can wait.6) Often times the local mechanic can provide valet service.7) Local mechanic can come over to your home if need be.8) Local mechanic can provide free advice.
With times getting leaner and the dollar not spreading as far; consumers will have to shop smarter and make their dollar stretch. If they are local drivers and don't need the added benefit of a national provider with shops across the country then the best option is the local mechanic.
The local mechanic that has built a name for him self, based on his reputation, the person that makes the customer come first, always.
