How to become a mandated reporter in New York State

Abuse is categorized as behaviors that are used to gain power over a child under the age of 18. Many people are confused as to what constitutes abuse and usually don't feel comfortable reporting for fear of harassment from the suspected abuser. Reporting child abuse is confidential and your information will not be shared with the person you are reporting. Child abuse comes in many forms of behaviors such as the following examples:

Physical abuse - Pushing, hitting, biting

Emotional abuse - criticizing, foul language, creating low self esteem

Psychological - breaking things, making threats, punching walls

Sexual - any sexual act (non-consenting)
