The Skies Opened and The Trees Will Sing...
Thats how we should Celebrate Earth Day next year. I'm certain all politically correct environmentalists will agree, right?
When a self-proclaimed environmental champion can't have his staff turn the mansion lights off, you know it's time the little guys step in and lead! It was reported that some very prominent green-activists made no apparent effort whatsoever to reduce their carbon footprint on the ONE day of the year it was supposed to matter. So here I am writing this now.
What effect will my intent and keystrokes have? Well, let's just see now...
By this time next year, I hope we can all CELEBRATE EARTH Day! Let's reduce our electricity & coal consumption by buying more LED bulbs. Have you done your homework? Do you realize the yearly savings of a 60 watt versus a new 11 watt? Now take it a step further, Lets buy even more LED bulbs and reduce the consumption from 11 watts per bulb now down to 3. Do the math, if one-half of your electric bill is from light bulbs, and you've reduced that portion of your bill by consuming 2/5th's of the watts from a fluorescent bulb, isn't it past-time to upgrade to LED's.
How far can we go with this? How about dual purpose water heaters? Manufactured to pre-heat water using separate heating components, but run together to deliver a nice toasty morning shower? If you have a natural gas water heater, what if you could completely eliminate that bill all but 5 months of the year? What if you had 2 water heaters, one solar the 2nd propane? Why don't you have them compliment each other and preheat with solar and still achieve the delivery temperature with a much greater savings on propane. Preheat with compost, superheat with solar and pump it with windmill driven electric pumps?
Now, take it another step again. During the winter, install a heat transfer system to overcome the loss of solar heat in winter. If that's not enough, use 3/4 full vented water jugs to heat and retain warmth along your foundation, if that's not enough, use your clothes dryer efficiently, do you run it during the cold hours in the basement or during the hot of the afternoon.
Should we be using our electric/gas clothes dryers at all? Yes, because I can wash two loads in the time it takes to dry one. While the towels are hanging outside, even though it's only 60 degrees, I still run the other batch in and finish the towels when they're no longer so saturated. The dryer will run less, money saved. The basement will be warmer, but only when I open the curtains and run the dryer, the towels won't take as long to dry. Money saved. Any questions?
If you disagree fine. If you Agree then Do something. If you really, really disagree, then you must be a politician.
