The mortician will always be here
While not the first job industry that may come to mind, the mortician will no doubt stand the test of time. Although patients pay them billions of dollars every year, doctors will never put the mortician out of business. Alas, as much as some individuals may wish to live forever, humans are mere mortals, so the need for services of a mortician will prevail. In some areas, the mortician also acts as the funeral director,as explained by Pay Scale. Although an associate degree is all that is needed in most areas, a funeral director or mortician must be licensed. Check with the specific requirements for your state prior to enrolling in classes or an educational program for this field.
The medical industry is timeless
As baby boomers are getting older, more people are presenting at physician offices, emergency rooms and hospitals as in-patients, suffering from a wide variety of diseases and medical conditions. Many of the illnesses and conditions are age-related. There are new infections, diseases and viruses that were never heard of just a short time ago. These new conditions are making tens of thousands of individuals sick and have killed many people. Conditions that have been around for a long time are also costing millions or billions in medical costs.
Cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and other diseases requires medical care. Poor health habits such as smoking, consuming too much salt or sweets contributes to illnesses and requires medical care. Doctors and nurses are not the only medical professionals needed to care for these individuals who are sick or suffering from age-related illness. Lab techs, x-ray technicians, specialty medical professionals are just some career paths in medicine that will stand the test of time.
There is new emphasis on keeping well. As society embraces the knowledge that keeping well can benefit them in the future, the field of wellness medicine opens new doors for many college and medical school graduates who may wish to embark on a career in medicine. People will always need healthcare and not in just one aspect of their lives.
Legal expertise is highly desired
In this time of the need for legal expertise in many areas of life, the lawyer and those associated with the legal industry are a hot commodity. Anyone who decides to pursue a career in a legal field is sure to have a lucrative career. Whether a criminal defense lawyer, judge, prosecutor, paralegal, legal secretary or any other employee in the legal field, a career in law is almost certain to guarantee a stable future.
Engineering is no longer boring
While what an engineer does, exactly, may still be a mystery to individuals who do not work in engineering and have no loved ones who do, many individuals have become informed about the lucrative careers awaiting them in several areas of engineering. Engineering education starts at younger ages now,as demonstrated by Discover Engineering. Films and other educational information presented to high school students shows them how to “dream big” and discover the world of engineering and how they can make a difference.

Mental health needs expertise
After years of cuts to mental health and simply turning those with mental health issues out into the streets after mental health inpatient facilities closed, communities, states and the federal government are all finally starting to realize that homeless shelters and emergency rooms are not the appropriate place to treat those suffering from mental illnesses. While emergency rooms may offer the 72-hour hold that many jurisdictions have for holding individuals, even against their will, when suffering a psychotic break and are a danger to themselves or others, it is not the long-term answer. Homeless shelter staff are trained to aid those who are homeless, but are not specifically mental health specialists.
President Obama increased funding to veterans for mental health care and asked for $235 million to fund new mental health programs. The increase in mental health funding will also go to aid schools to be able to better detect early warning signs in students with potential problems that may be mental-health-related.The Washington Post also saysthat part of the new funding will train new mental health professionals.
As there have been many incidents where individuals with mental health problems have recently committed horrific crimes, often resulting in significant loss of innocent lives and long-term suffering, the need for mental health professionals will indeed stand the test of time. Perhaps early intervention as a result of increased funding and training of mental health professionals will be able to save individuals from losing a loved one or their own life as a result of an individual suffering from mental health issues.
While there are some industries that are no longer the best fields to work in or to get an education in, there are other industries that will almost certainly be around. As certain industries expand, they will most likely always stand the test of time.
