There are so many options in today's world for choosing a career and for anyone that is just starting out in life the world is at their feet. If you have had an interest in weather for most of your life or you think you would excel at this type of work then you should explore on how to become a meteorologist. Your responsibility as a meteorologist will include forecasting the weather, researching weather phenomena, studying air pollution and global warming data. To accomplish this you will need an advanced degree.
You have to start while you're still in high school to achieve the best results. Concentrate on math and science classes and if possible take advanced classes in this field. It will prove to be beneficial later on in your career. You will also have to maintain as high an overall grade point average that is achievable. An excellent way to get information would be to talk to your guidance councilor at school; they can get you a list of colleges that offer a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology. You will find that the competition for these colleges is great as there are only 20 in the US.
Before you finish your senior year obtain admissions information and applications. This should be done as early in your senior year as possible. Get familiar with the work of different types of meteorologists then you can plan your degree and career based on this information. The National Weather Service requires certain courses so make sure the college you attend offer these. You will need certain courses regardless of your goals in this field.
You can sometimes obtain a B.S. in a science field that is related, such as physics, and get hired for certain positions as a meteorologist however you would need to have taken a number of mandatory meteorological courses as an undergraduate. If you want to be a TV weather person then choose the appropriate, electives or minors such as journalism and communications would be a must. Make plans to obtain a Master of Science degree in meteorology as soon as you can in order to be able to advance in your career or to do development or research work.
It is a smart idea to work at internships through your collage years. This is another way of getting the information you will need to continue in your chosen career. They can provide recommendations to help you with any future degrees and employment. If your goal is teaching at a university or doing intensive research you should consider receiving a Ph.D.
