When you become a dental assistant your duties will range from assisting the dentist to public relations. You will be the first one the clients see when they come for an appointment so you will be representing the employer you work for. Your professionalism and skill will be your greatest asset. Your job will require versatility, reliability, and willingness to take on many different tasks.

Your duties will include assisting a dentist during different treatment procedures, taking and developing x-rays, taking blood pressure and pulse while asking about the patient's medical history, preparing and sterilizing instruments and equipment. You could also be serving as an infection control officer by developing control protocol.

Making patients feel comfortable and welcome during and after their dental care will be a large part of your duties along with providing instructions for the ongoing care of their teeth especially if they have had surgery or other procedures done. Your duties may include taking impressions of peoples teeth for study cast which is models of their teeth. You will have to know how to use computers in the office for booking patients scheduling appointments as well as with suppliers. You have many opportunities in this field such as providing direct patient care in all of the specialties including orthodontics and pediatrics. You can also work as a representative at a dental company.

A dental assistant career can take you to work environments that you haven't even thought of. It is not limited to private practice; it can take you into hospitals, laboratories or dental companies.
