Important Tips for Auto Body Maintenance

From 3arf

One of the most overlooked aspects of car ownership is the body of the vehicle itself. While many of us choose a car based on its appearance, we sometimes forget to maintain it properly. There are a lot of things that can determine how well the body survives the stress of daily driving, the forces of natures, and accidents, and taking care of these problems before they become a major issue is the best course. In areas where there is snow all winter long, there will undoubtedly be salt on the roadways. While this is a great benefit while driving on slippery roads, it isn’t beneficial to the vehicle. Left on steel for any length of time, it will cause rust, many times to the undercarriage, where it is least noticeable. If at all possible vehicles that are driven regularly on treated roadways should be washed frequently. At automated car washes, be sure to include the undercarriage option when you make your selection. Having the vehicle rust proofed in the first place, will help to prevent a great many of these problems.Minor dents and dings, while they may not seem terribly unsightly, can and do lead to rust areas. Where there is a break in the paint, exposing bare metal, rust will begin, and even the most insignificant scrape can become a major problem. Even if there is no damage to the vehicle body, areas such as fenders may begin to develop rust. All areas should be taken care of before they have a chance to spread. Rusted areas that are ignored, will, over time, grow to a size that requires more work to repair, and more money.Small chips on paint may be barely noticeable, as are tiny rust spots on bumpers and hub caps. These can, however, become more and more unsightly. Small chips can be touched up, either by matching the paint color of your vehicle through a dealership and doing it yourself, or taking it to a professional. Bumpers and hubcaps should be cleaned thoroughly to keep rust spots to a minimum. While it may seem elemental, just washing and waxing the vehicle on a regular basis will go a long way to keeping it looking good. Stains from bugs, leaves, or just dirt and dust can cause permanent marks on the paint if they are left for any period of time. With a little work and regular maintenance, it is possible to keep any vehicle looking like new for many years.
