Every person should know about his or her rights concerning dis-crimination, whistle blower laws and harassment. First of all discrimination and harassment are illegal and can warrant legal action. Also, whistle blower laws are set forth to protect people from forms of harassment and other illegal acts of retaliation. Not being subjected to these illegal acts are seminal to one's civil rights. In fact, as many people can probably recite by memory discrimination in the workplce on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin or sex is illegal. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act pionered these rights in 1964.In kind sexual harassment and discrimination are subsets of each other. In basic law harassment is any unwelcomed sexual advance or conduct in the workplace that facilitates a hostile, intimidating or offensive work environment. Conduct offensive and/or detrimentally related to an individual gender is discrimi-nation. Both sexual harassment and discrimination encompass a broad range of behaviors from lewd or racially offensive jokes and foul language to verbal threats and outright physical assaults.A person suffering belittling remarks, racial slurs or other indignities about race or color is put under tremendous stress, especially in the work place.Anyone that is retaliated against for reporting company wrong-doings to respective agencies in the government is protected by the No Fear Act. Any type of retaliation is illegal.Stopping harassment can be achieved in many ways. Confront the harasser if no imminent danger exist. Another way is to file a complaint through company procedure. If that doesn't stop it file with the EEOC office. There are also fair employment practice statutes in every state in the U.S. Some are weak in scope but examine them anyway. Then there is mediation which sometimes solves these problems. Thus the last resort usually is to sue for damages if possible.Record every incident, meeting and all things related to the situation. That is an important factor if it all boils over in to litigation. Awards are feasible for loss of wages, personal injuries, attorneys and punitive damages and assorted other monies available for recoup by law.To be secure in ones own self is a primary right and have protection under laws already enacted is everyone's right. To be free of harassment, have recourse to compensation, and void of fear of retaliation is something every person should know in order to stop any illegal acts against them.
