How to get Started Reviewing Books

From 3arf

Do you love to read? Can you write an informative, yet entertaining review of the books you read? Are you interested in getting free books? If so, freelance book reviewin may be for you. Here are a few tips to get you started.

1. Come up with a company name and start a website. Even just a book blog with your company name will suffice.

2. Get a dedicated email address. AOL, Google, and Yahoo! all offer free email addresses. I suggest having your company name as your mail address, for example, [email protected]

3. Write some reviews for large sites. Amazon and Barnes & Noble are good places to start, as well as allreaders.com.

4. Find some small, specialty sites that may be restricted to just 1 or a few genres, and send them a sample review. Most will not pay for the review, but will help build up your portfolio.

5. Get organized! I have 2 binders, 1 for my published reviews. After one o my reviews goes live onlin, I print it out and place it in my binder. The other binder is to keep track of the books I recieve to review. Many books come with a press release, which I put in the binder. Be sure to make a note of who the book is to be reviewed for!

6. Build up your portfolio. Relax, this won't happen overnight. It will take a while to become a good reviewer.

7. Expand your horizons. Contact publishing houses and publicists to obtain review copies.

8. Fulfill responsibilities. Don't let the books sit for months before you review them. Consider donting them to your library when you are finished with thm. Advance Reader's Copies are illegal to sell, and will say so on the book. 'Regular' books are legal to sell, but this is considered unethical, and if a company finds out you are selling the books they send you, the may choose not to send you more. There are several book trading sites online, these can be a good way to exchange those 'bum' books for some you really want.

9. This is most important! Have fun and enjoy yourself! Don't let reviewing become a burden to you... reading is such and enjoable hobby.

Book reviewing is a great way to meet authors, gain publishing knowledge, and make a mark for yourself. If you are an avid reader, this is one thing to really check into.
