How to become an Editor
You can become an editor in three easy steps.
First, you have to love to write. Writing has to be like breathing for you. It must not be a chore, but a passion. It must be something you can’t live without and want to do for the rest of your life.
Second, you must be knowledgeable about what you write about- or be willing to learn. It is preferable to have both qualities. If you are knowledgeable about some things, you will have a starting point. You will be able to address those areas with expertise and little effort. If you are willing to learn, there is no limit to what you can do. Plus, you will become a more educated, well-rounded individual.
Finally, you must- I repeat- must be motivated. You will not be able to sit behind a desk and wait for the material to drop into your lap. You must get out there and work hard. You must seek out stories. You must make sure advertisers are being pursued. You must be able to determine which stories are indispensable and which are a waste of time. You must be able to delegate.
Being and editor is a busy life, but rewarding. One “newbie” editor is having the time of her life. She just recently started her own online newspaper representing her own town. As the editor starting a new publication, everything is her responsibility- and her privilege. She is able to determine the direction and main focus of the publication. She is currently writing stories, seeking writers, marketing to advertisers, and showcasing her hometown all at once. It is an enormous task, but she is enjoying every minute of it.

She is very excited about her venture and extremely determined. She knows she has a lot of work ahead of her, but she is confident she will succeed. Why? Because she is doing what she loves.
