In past days to become an auto mechanic required little more of a young person than the completion of a few years of high school shop class and a desire to work on cars. Luckily for those who wish to become an auto mechanic there are a variety of routes to secure a future in the profession, but still it requires that a person possess a strong desire to learn and the comprehension that success will not come quickly.For most people who desire to become an auto mechanic, the career path begins with the acquisition of basic automotive knowledge that is learned either in high school or is discovered of their own accord. After graduating, a future auto mechanic will absolutely need to attend a vocational school that teaches auto repair for a minimum of 1 to 2 years. Following this upgrade to their education, an individual wishing to become an auto mechanic can then begin to seek employment which in most cases will be an entry level position consisting of performing very basic repairs such as tune-ups, oil changes or other simple aspects of car repairs. ASE offers certifications in eight separate categories of auto repair such as engine repair, brake systems and electrical systems among others, and each certification requires 2 years of experience and the successful completion of an examination. To become an auto mechanic that is considered a Master Automobile Technician by ASE standards an individual must complete examinations in all eight areas of repair.For those that desire to become an auto mechanic the future is usually a bright one, with average salaries for qualified auto mechanics in the average range of $30,000 to $55,000 per year. The number of jobs in the field for an auto mechanic are split about equally between available work at automobile dealerships and private repair shops, and an individual with the proper training and dedication should have little difficulty in finding good employment as an auto mechanic.
