The research laboratory assistant is responsible for maintaining and managing the laboratory on a daily basis. It is their responsibility to keep the laboratory running smoothly. Other laboratories will substitute an associate degree with relevant experience. A person who has a background in math, chemistry or biology can be trained on the job to work as a research technician.

The area of study would cover hematology, urinalysis, immunology, microbiology and clinical chemistry. These programs typically offer externships where students receive practical field experience.

The outlook for research technicians is considered good with projected growth to be at about 16 to 17 percent. There are also new opportunities opening up in the growing field of green technology.

Research technicians often work alone or with other technicians.They are sometimes required to make presentations. A part of their responsibility is to keep the lab and the equipment clean.
