How to become a Rabbi

From 3arf

Becoming a rabbi is not so different from becoming an ordained minister in any religious organization. The first real requirement should be that you feel a divine call from God. Without this call, all man-given credentials ring hollow.

Once you believe that you feel this call from God, go and sit down with your rabbi and discuss the possible directions that are available to fulfill this calling. You may find that being a rabbi is not really the best direction for you personally. If you still believe that it is the direction to pursue, then you need to evaluate your education. If you are still a teenager, build your college plans around the requirements to achieve this goal. If you are already and established adult, you will need to examine what courses that you need to prepare you.

Weigh the financial side carefully if you have a family to support. The Old Testament makes it clear that you're are responsible to meet their needs.

You will need to complete your rabbinical education either formally or informally. Usually, there is room for ministry before this is completed if you are diligent. Be prepared to have to overcome numerous obstacles especially if you are an adult when you begin this adventure.

It will be completed at your ordination ceremony called Semichah by the laying on of hands by rabbis. This direction is extremely life changing. Proceed at every step with caution and reverence.
