In the United Kingdom it is customary for an employer to give an apprentice one day off with pay a week, to attend college in order to qualify for a City of Guilds Certificate of competency in motor mechanics.
A Motor mechanic apprenticeship usually lasts four years, and in that time, an apprentice should be able to satisfactory complete all motor repairs without assistance. A competent auto mechanic can earn a good wage and will always be in work. A motor mechanic should always keep up to date with technological changes. The motorcar is changing fast to compensate for demands on petroleum. Hybrid cars with new technology are coming on to the market.
