How to reveal that you're engaged to a person of another race

When introducing someone to your family who is of a different race, it's always best to talk it over with them first, get a feel for how your family will react, before you bring him or her over. You wouldn't want there to be a scene or put your fiance/fiancee in an uncomfortable situation.

Even though your parents may not be known bigots, they might still believe that it is best to marry within your own race and by you revealing that you're dating someone of a different race, it might stir up some feelings that you never thought existed within your family. Let them know how much you love this person, and that there is nothing they can say or do that will change how you and your fiance/fiancee feel about one another.

Arrange a meeting with your parents, you and your fiance/fiancee first, before introducing him or her to the whole clan. Explain to your fiance/fiancee that this is something new that your family has to get used to and reassure your fiance/fiancee that everything will be fine.

If it is planned, it eases up any tension that could be possible and it gives your parents and fiance/fiancee a better chance at getting to know the person instead of the color. Never go to your family out of the blue with anyone regardless of race, always give them a head start. People in general like knowing what to expect, so don't put your parents and fiance/fiancee in an awkward position.

They just might adore your fiance/fiancee. However, don't become angry if they don't accept it, and don't let it break you and your partner up. Becoming angry only creates emotional scars that can come between you and your partner. And any negativity will harm the relationship.

Take the same approach with friends, arrange a meeting only after you have revealed to them that you're engaged to someone of a different race. If you have any other friends who are engaged or married to someone of a different race, it's best to invite them along, too, not that they're a token couple, it just because you'll be surrounded with others who have something in common with you, or a big thing called strength in numbers. Be happy with your relationship, and don't let others put their negative views and opinions on it.
