How to Request to Leave Work when you are Sick

From 3arf

All of sudden you get dizzy; you are nauseated, you vomit, or some other unexpected thing happens to you.  You know the job is counting on you but you are so out of it that you can't do anything.  You need to go to the doctor's office, the emergency room or go home.  Here are steps to take to help you get through this or other emergencies:

1.  Call the office and tell the secretary you are ill and need to go home or to the doctor's office. Explain your symptoms and the secretary when you would like to leave.  Most places of work make allowances for these emergencies and will send a relief person to your station or room.  If there is no relief person needed, the secretary will alert the supervisor or boss of this emergency.

2.   Tidy up your station or office and prepare to leave.   If someone is to relieve  you or you work where it is imperative that others take off where you left off,  leave brief and specific  instructions.  Also let colleagues that work with you know that you will be leaving.  Then go to the office and sign out.  If a reason is needed, briefly note your illness.   Never leave and go home or to the hospital without alerting those in charge.

3.  If needed, call back to the office and let them know if you will be staying at the hospital and perhaps will not be into work the next day.  Make sure you keep your place of work updated.

If your sickness will be for an extended period, call your job and tell them.  If there is a problem, they can call you.  If yours is a job where you can do work at home, be sure to clear this with the  the secretary or your boss.  Make sure to cover all of your bases, sick or not.   If you are too sick to contact your place of work, have a relative do so for you.  If you have been to the hospital or doctor's office, upon returning to work, hand to the secretary or boss the hospital or doctor's excuse.  This helps gives your sickness validity and provides you with credibility in most cases.  Communication is key.  After all, your job needs you, and you need your job.
