How to Remove Window Tint Film

From 3arf

Removing window tint is something that many people may have to do in their lifetime, with many executive cars driving around with illegal windows, it makes you wonder if the owners have actually been questioned as to why the cars are in that state. This article is also based on experience on how to remove the tint films, as this is something that the writer has experienced when selling cars, rather than actually removing tinted glass itself.

Removing a window tint is similar to removing anything stuck on windows, or even anything stuck on car bodywork. You'll need a hairdryer and about 15 minutes per window to get the job done properly, and some glass cleaner to make the windows shiny again afterwards. If you don't have a hairdryer, it's worth (before you open the window to take the top of the film off) tipping a kettle of warm water over the window, which should have the same effect. Don't use boiling water, as this may crack the glass, causing a costly repair job.

The trick is to heat the glue on the window tint film, which loosens the stick to the window making the job easier and safer. Please note that this also works with car sign writing and anything stuck to the bodywork for prolonged periods, such as 'GB' stickers and even sellotape from items put on display in the windows. Once the glue is loosened on part of the window, pull the film off for that part. This takes time, as you need to ideally heat every part of the window to stop the tint film from splitting and therefore making the job a lot more difficult.

Once you've managed to get the film off the windows, the next job is to clean the glass itself with a window cleaner, in order to get the shine back. This once again works easiest when the glue is warm, as it will smear more easily, therefore coming unstuck from the window. This may take two or three tries, however it can make the situation of visibility worse than before, before it gets better. The window should shine before the job is done, and once this happens, move to the next window. It's also important to make sure that every window is cleaned with a different piece of cloth, as it's then not a case of moving the problem from one window to another, with the job taking a lot longer.
