How to Pickout a Dress

From 3arf

If you are like every other bride in the world and need a little advice about how to find the perfect wedding gown, there really is none. The only real way to find one is by trying a lot of different styles on to find the one that looks the best on you. I have worked as a Bridal Consultant and seamstress for many years and here is some advice for finding that perfect wedding gown:

I used to work at the only Bridal Shop in town that sold dresses up to a size thirty-two. Yes, they make them and they are beautiful. We sold dresses from a size two to a thirty-two. By the way, did you know that the average size for a woman in America is fourteen? Anyway let’s get back to my point.

People will tell you that certain dresses only look good on certain body types and that is not necessarily the case. I have heard that a very skinny bride can get away with wearing any type of gown. I have seen some very skinny girls put on a straight gown and just look like a toothpick. They will also tell you that and empire waist will make your chest look bigger while making your butt look smaller. Personally, I have seen that style just make a whole lot of different people look pregnant. Not a very good thing when a person is not in that condition. I have also heard people say that a big woman needs to wear a straight cut gown to make her appear thinner. That is also a crock. I have seen some very big women but on a big ball gown type dress and be absolutely stunning when everything else looked awful. If you don’t have any idea what a ball gown dress is, they are the old-fashion type dresses that have a fitted top and a gigantic full skirt.

They only thing that I have heard about picking out a wedding gown that seems to be right on the nose is that if you have a big chest, don’t go strapless. You do not want to have the fear of losing your dress during the wedding and reception. For every other wives tale, do not believe them. Take some time out of your busy schedule and please go to a Bridal Shop and try all sorts of styles on. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Also remember that whatever you do, never, ever look in a book or magazine, see a dress that you like and decide that it’s the one and rush to order it before ever even trying it on. I have seen a lot of very disappointed brides that way. The dress never looks the same on you as it does on the person in the magazine or book.
