How to Make a Veggie Turkey
As the holiday season approaches and non-vegetarians feast on their traditional turkey dinner, vegetarians are left to ponder their own choices for a vegetarian feast during the season. Luckily, more and more recipes have been created to give vegetarians a better selection of holiday foods.
One of the most popular recipes is the creation of the vegetarian turkey, as it just doesn’t feel right to have Thanksgiving dinner without a turkey on the table, vegetarian or otherwise. If you are thinking about making a veggie turkey, here is a great little recipe for your use.
Contratry to popular belief, making a veggie turkey is not as difficult as it seems. As you need is the right ingredients and you are well on your way. The ingredients that are needed for the preparation of the dish are:
- 6 blocks of firm, well-pressed tofu.
- 3 tablespoon of sage, chopped
- 1 tablespoon of thyme, minced
- 1 tablespoon of rosemary, minced
- 1 tablespoon of powdered vegetable broth
- 2 tablespoon of poultry seasoning
- 2 tablespoon of soy sauce
- 2 teaspoon of Dijon mustard
- 2 cups of stuffing, vegetarian
- 1/4 of balsamic vinegar
- 1/2 cup of red wine
Step 1
The first step involves the preparation of the tofu. Process the tofu in a food processor or blender until it is creamy and smooth. If it is too much tofu to process in one single batch, you can break it up into several batches.
Step 2
Now add the processed tofu into a mixing bowl and stir in the thyme, sage, rosemary, poultry seasoning and powdered vegetable broth. You should keep stirring the mixture until everything is well combined. Leave the mixture to sit while you prepare the colander.
Step 3
Line the colander with a towel or cheesecloth. Place the tofu mixture in the colander and cover the mixture with another thin towel or cheesecloth. Place something heavy of the covered tofu mixture and leave it to chill for at least 2 to 3 hours.
Step 4
Once the tofu mixture is firm and chilled, make a well or hole in the middle of the mixture, leaving approximately 1.5 inches of tofu shell in the colander. Gently fill the “well” in the tofu with the vegetarian stuffing. A popular vegetarian stuffing is sautéed onions and celery but it is up to you to stuff the veggie turkey with your own personal choice.
Step 5
Once the veggie turkey is completely stuffed, carefully transfer it onto a baking sheet that is already greased. Whisk the balsamic vinegar, red wine, soy sauce and Dijon mustard together to create the basting sauce. Brush this concoction liberally on the veggie turkey. While making the basting sauce, you can also pre-heat the oven at 350 degrees.
Step 6
Bake the veggie turkey for one and a half hours, all the time basting it at regular 15 minute intervals. After baking, leave the turkey to cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
