How to Make a Successful Transition to your new Job
You have landed that new job, congratulations, getting a new job is certainly an accomplishment in these times of economic problems and high unemployment. However, securing the job is only the beginning of a new adventure, one that is both exciting and frightening. You will want to make your first day a success because first impressions count so much.
Preparation is one way to make a good first impression. A few days before you are due to start your new job, decide upon your outfit for the first day, and launder and press your clothes. Clean the shoes that you are going to wear. Go and buy two alphabetical notebooks and a journalist’s notebook. One alphabetical notebook is for a personal directory of people’s names, titles, and telephone or extension numbers, the other is for tasks, procedures and information entered by topic. The Journalist’s notebook is for quick, general notes that you might want to enter later into one of the other notebooks.
Make sure that you know how long the journey to your new job will take at the time you will be travelling. It might be sensible to do a dry run before your first day. Aim to be five or ten minutes early, this shows that you are eager to work.
Induction and other training will probably take up your first few days. Ask if you do not understand anything, and take notes in your notebooks so that you do not repeatedly ask the same questions. By taking notes, you will impress your boss or trainers because it shows interest, enthusiasm and that you value what they are saying to you. It also shows that you are prepared to work hard and want to learn quickly.
Treat everyone respectfully. Until you know people better, it is best to steer clear of controversial subjects. Do not hark back to your old job and tell your new colleagues that they did things better in your old company. There might be a very good reason why, in this company, your colleagues do a task in that particular way.
Repeat people’s names when you are introduced, they will be easier to remember. Write them down when you get a chance. You will not remember everyone’s name at once but do not worry, just try to remember a few.
Starting a new job can be both exciting and frightening but if you prepare properly, show enthusiasm, listen attentively and make notes, your day will go smoothly. The next day will be easier and eventually you will settle down and be successful in your new job.
