How to Make Turkey Place Card Holders for Thanksgiving Dinner
If you are planning to have others over for Thanksgiving dinner and would like to set out place cards so everyone will know where to sit, one fun way to do it is by making turkey card holders out of apples, which fits in well with the autumn theme of Thanksgiving. Another plus is that your guests will have something to nibble on while waiting on their meal, as these card holders are 100% edible.
To make your card holders, you’ll need: a bag of red delicious apples, a bag of orange jelly fruit candy, a bag of large size marshmallows, a box of raisons, a bag of candy corn, a bag of gum drops, a bag of red licorice, a box of tooth picks and a box of various colored fruit roll ups.
To make your turkey, first make the tail by spearing a bunch of gum drops onto a toothpick and then sticking it into the back side of your apple. Do this several times forming a tail fan.
Next, make the neck by poking a toothpick through a large piece of orange jelly fruit candy (or two or three), and the head, by toping the neck with a big fat marshmallow; affix to the apple with toothpicks. After that you can pin a piece of licorice to both the top and bottom of the head to simulate a comb and waddle, again using toothpicks. After that break a toothpick into little parts and use those parts to stick on the candy corn beak and the raison eyes.
The legs can be made by spearing a small marshmallow with a tooth pick and then sticking that toothpick into the underside of your turkey. You’ll need to make three of legs to stabilize your turkey, so be sure when you put them in to place and space them like a three legged stool so the turkey will be able to stand easily.
Next comes the hard part. Unroll your fruit roll ups and cut them into feather shapes, and then, pin each feather to the sides of your turkey with yet more toothpicks. This part is easier if you draw and then cut out a feather from construction paper or cardboard to use as a guide when cutting your fruit rollups.
Finish by either slicing the apple sideways and slipping in the card with the name on it or by buying and using one of those tiny little card holders they sell at party stores with the spike on the bottom.
The finished product should be both cute and good to eat.
