How to Make Technical Speech

From 3arf

When it comes to making a good speech, the key is to connect with your audience. If you can't connect with your audience, you are going to be leaving them clueless or perhaps just sleeping in their seats. Of course, they could always just leave early because they aren't getting anything out of your speech. So how do you give a good technical speech that will give some value to the audience?

The first thing you are going to want to do is to make sure that you are relating to the audience. If you are giving a technical speech this means using those technical terms, but putting them into ways that people can understand. Basically you want to talk about the principles or terms in a way that the people can understand. If you can do this you will not be dumbing down the speech, but allowing the audience to enter your world.

Something to keep in mind is that you aren't going to be giving technical speeches about just technical subjects. Sure, you could be giving a speech about science or math, but you could just be giving a speech about the make up of the 3-4 defense in American football or how the banking system works. Basically anyone can give a technical talk regardless of what the subject is.

Use an upbeat tone when you are talking about the drier parts of your subject. I had a friend who was a science major and it was impossible to listen to him talk sometimes because of his dry delivery. The subject matter was fairly interesting, but the delivery was so boring that everyone would just glaze over. You should use examples, and get the audience involved if at all possible.

Make sure that you portray yourself as someone who is an expert on the field. People will be more than willing to give you some leeway if you know what you are talking about. Even if the entire speech isn't exciting, if you know what you are talking about, it can lead people to at least try to keep up with you. Some might even be in awe of your knowledge.

Giving a technical speech is all about conveying the information in a manner that all can enjoy. Use terms that are something that audience can relate to, and be informative, yet entertaining. If you can do that you can deliver a good talk that will inform the audience, but will cause them to possibly even want to learn more in the future.
