How to Find after Market Mufflers
If you know how to weld I probably don't need to tell you where to find after market mufflers. For those of us who leave the flying sparks to the experts, mufflers can be found just about anywhere and in all after-market types. There are catalog's you can mail order from such as J.C. Whitney who has just about anything needed to customize your car. However, by the time you mail order and take the part to a muffler shop for install you probably have not saved any money and definitely have not saved any time.
I recommend a personal mechanic for installing mail order items as it will be the cheapest way to go. In the alternative to knowing someone that can weld, most muffler shops carry, or can order and install one for you. Most national chains such as Pep boys,Triple A, or Meineke to name a few can install mufflers for you and most carry after market supplies as well.
The one thing you will want to know when going the after market route is what kind of sound you want emanating from the posterior of your ride. The old traditional glass packs may not be the sound you are looking for in all cases. Usually what is called a turbo muffler which comes in many makes has the deep baritone (but not too loud) touch for most vehicles. It's also important to know that not all cars will accept an after-market muffler so the best way to find out is to have a muffler shop put the car on a rack and look underneath. Some muffler shops don't want to take the time of re-plumbing exhaust pipes so you may need a second or even third opinion in some cases. When I buy a new car there are a few things first on my list of customization and they are usually the most bang for the buck. Those items include window tinting, a turbo muffler and a chrome tailpipe tip. The latter two can be performed at any muffler shop including the ones mentioned above.
Most of the muffler shops will counsel you and discuss the best type of muffler for your car and they costs around $100 installed so it's a great upgrade to your vehicle. The ancillary benefits to after market mufflers is not only a more robust sound but in most cases they provide less restriction of the exhaust gasses creating better gas mileage and more horsepower.
Happy motoring, vroom vroom.
