How to Find Medical Billing Jobs

From 3arf

Medical billing jobs are all the rave at the moment.  With the healthcare field growing every year, more and more schools are offering medical billing and coding education paths, however once one gets out of school what is the next step?  Obviously everyone wants to find a job immediately out of school, but how can one accomplish this and where do they start? The first obstacle everyone has to overcome is that of experience.  Many job ads state they need an experienced medical biller, one who has X number of years.  Getting experience when experience is required is no easy task, however anyone can actually accomplish it.  The first way to do this is through volunteer work.  While many won't actually start out getting billing experience this way, it's a great way to get your foot in the door to a hospital or physician's office.  Second, look at insurance call center agencies such as Blue Cross Blue Shield or even United Health Care.  By getting jobs that allow you to assist with claims, such as one would as a call service representative, one can easily make the transition to a medical biller later. If you have experience, what and where should you be looking for jobs?  There are many job boards available online such as Monster.com, Indeed.com, etc, but consider using more specific job boards to become a medical biller.AAPC.com, the American Academy of Professional Coders, orAHIMA.org, the American Health Information Management Association, for example both cater to healthcare professionals only and often have up-to-date job offers.Resources such as AAPC and AHIMA also provide networking experiences for anyone who is a registered member.  The healthcare field can be tricky to infiltrate and often having someone on your side who is already in it, can help you get your foot in the door.  Don't neglect networking.  Make sure you attend local meetings and seminars on a regular basis and introduce yourself to everyone.  Always keep business cards in your purse or wallet. Finally, don't hesitate to take a different job simply to get your foot in the door.  Often times a medical receptionist doesn't just greet patients, they room patients, they help with billing, and they help manage insurances.  Always be willing to keep an open mind in terms of what job you will do so you can get the experience you need and get to your goal of becoming a medical biller.
