How to Find Good Job Search Engines

From 3arf

While most job search advice focuses on writing cover letters, building the best possible resume and how to handle yourself in an interview; none of that does much good if you can't find jobs to apply for.

Finding jobs to apply for isn't always the easiest thing in the world. The newspapers don't have as much to offer as they used to, since the Internet job sites became big. Some of the big search engines like Monster and Yahoo! Hot Jobs are great, but sometimes you want a search engine that focuses on the kind of jobs you want.

There are lots of good job search engines available, and many of them focus on niches such as craigslist, which only offers local jobs, or snagajob.com that focuses on hourly or part time work. It just can take some extra time and effort to find those good job sites.

There are two ways to find good job search engines. The first is through a web search engine like google or yahoo. Using a search such as 'job listings' or 'job search engine' can get hundreds of results. A good way to marrow down the list is with a more specific search phrase - 'medical job listings' 'management job search engine' or 'manufacturing jobs' will all return a smaller list of job search engines that include the jobs you are looking for.

Read over the blurb for the job search engines on the first page of results, and look for those where the blurb describes job listings matching your search. If you are looking for an entry level job, don't waste your time on a site advertising 'hundreds of high income management positions'.

When you've picked out those job search engines that look like they meet your needs, go to those sites, and do a quick search to see how many jobs they have in your area. If at a quick search, before narrowing down the search by keyword, they come back with dozens or hundreds of jobs, or even thousands of jobs (for those folks living in major metro areas), take a look over the job listings - if too many are for 'work from home' 'make money now!' or other such scam warnings, move on. If the majority of the jobs look legitimate, you have a good site to search on.

Another good way to find a good job search engine is through employment blogs andjob hunting resource sites. Most of them will have a page or post (or several) reviewing different job search engines and giving pros and cons and which that site or blog thinks is the best. Look for sites focusing on general job hunting advice, and on your industry or field.

A good job search engine can be a big help in finding the right job for you. So take the time to find the right ones for you. Good hunting.
