How to Decorate the Living Room for Thanksgiving

From 3arf

A well-decorated living room will wow your guests and make them really know that it's Thanksgiving. Whether you choose a fall-themed design or you go with a more narrow Thanksgiving theme, you will be surprised at how easy it is to transform your living room into a comfortable holiday space.

First, choose your design and theme. A fall theme would include a nice earth-tone palette of colors, such as brown, pine green, orange, fiery red, and the yellow hues in between. A Thanksgiving theme would certainly include that same palette, but you may be able to use different decorations, such as a picture of a turkey. Nevertheless, even if you cannot choose just 'one' design, you can fuse a couple of designs in order to make the room a unique space for your Thanksgiving get-together.

Once you have the palette of colors, you can start making or purchasing some of the decorations. A really easy way to transform your room is to change the drapes or the color of the blinds. If you have blinds, you can drape a textile across it to create a more 'homey' feel. If you have drapes, changing the color and the texture of the drapes (to the colors in your chosen palette) can instantly change the 'feel' of your living room. Another easy way to start decorating your room is to put down a tablecloth on the coffee table (or on any table) in your living room. Again, choose a fabric that has some texture to provide some interest.

You can easily purchase items that are created specifically for Thanksgiving. For instance, pumpkin-scented candles and fake cornucopias can be found in any department store. However, creating your own decorations is easy too. For instance, you can create your own 'cornucopia' by purchasing a basket (you can even find a horn basket for a traditional cornucopia) and then fill it with a fall harvest, including apples, pumpkins, and other gourds. You can put fall flowers in a vase and add some woody plants.

If you also want to transform your furniture, such as sofas and chairs, to become part of the theme, you can find a textile or fabric that is in your chosen palette and simply sew the edges to make them neat. Then, drape the fabric across your sofa or chair. It will add a nice color contrast to the color of the chair, especially if the chair's color is not earth-toned.

You can also be more blunt in your approach and put up framed pictures of turkeys, cornucopias, and other Thanksgiving-related pictures. These can be hung or they can be simply placed on your coffee or side tables.

Decorating your living room for Thanksgiving is a fun and rewarding task that will ready your home for one of the biggest American holidays.
