How to Deal with Misunderstanding in Work Place

From 3arf

Conflicts are bound to happen at places of work. If progress is to take place and for an organization to achieve set goals, conflict is then inevitable. Conflict can be both positive and negative but the positive conflict leads to innovation, better ways of doing things, harmony amongst the workers, and unity of purpose amongst all the workers in an organization. If a job description gives several workers the same responsibilities without clearly stating who does what, misunderstanding is bound to occur.

The first step in dealing with any misunderstanding at work is to know that misunderstandings are bound to happen when you relate and work with other individuals and this also is inevitable. Most misunderstandings that occur at places of work are either a result of poor communication or various personalities trying to gain an edge over the others. To avoid this, management should clearly spell out each worker's duties and responsibilities. Also, communication should be better enhanced by management.

An open-minded person takes things easy and handles every situation like he has been prepared for it. To deal effectively with conflict at work, be an open-minded person; do not fret when the other person crosses your path. Understand that this is bound to happen; since most conflicts are caused by poor communication' Listen more to the other party instead of trying to get even with that person. Hear all that the other party has to say so as to know how to respond to the situation. As much as possible, avoid being defensive. Trace the cause of the misunderstanding and let the other person know that you are ready to settle the misunderstanding. In case you cannot do it on your own or it is not working, call on a third party and explain everything that transpired so that this person would serve as a mediator and would settle the misunderstanding amiably.

When misunderstanding arises, try not to use verbal aggression as this is the first instinct in defending yourself but this only worsens the situation. Maintain your maturity and professionalism and do not let this misunderstanding get in the way of your job or your relationship with other workers. Focus on solving the cause of this conflict and ensure that such does not occur again. This can only be achieved when the parties involved come together to analyze the cause of the misunderstanding and jointly proffer solutions to the misunderstanding. In doing this, stay calm and do not act before you think. Take time to think before responding or acting as this goes a long way and shows that you are really ready to settle the misunderstanding. In your work place, let people try as much as possible to relate with everyone and respect all existing authorities. Misunderstanding would be minimal if  these approaches are observed.
