How to Deal with Auto Mechanics

From 3arf

When dealing with auto mechanics, you have to assume that they are always going to attempt to scam you. This isn't always going to be the case, and most aren't looking to take more money than you really need to pay, but keeping this mentality will ensure that you are getting the best service at the best price possible.

By taking your vehicle to a mechanic, they are automatically going to assume that you are there, because you can't do the work yourself. With this assumption they can often take advantage of the unknowing. This could mean that they add extra items onto your bill that they say need to replaced. In order to avoid this, make sure that you take your vehicle to a few different locations and get estimates of what needs to be done and how much it will cost. By making the mechanics justify themselves in their repairs, they are less likely to scam you by adding in more parts as they would rather you just pay to have the work done through them than go to the other guys that are cheaper. This also helps as it will help you to get a better price.

The next thing to remember is that regardless of what you know about vehicles, you are still the customer and you are in charge. They can't do anything to your vehicle without your permission. So if they say you need something, make them take you to your vehicle, show you the problem, explain the solution, and explain why it needs to be repaired. By doing this, you make them have to work to get that extra money. Sure you might really need something else, but ALWAYS make them prove it to you. Also, tell them that you want to see the old parts whenever you have something done to your vehicle. By doing this, you ensure that you are actually getting replacement parts and you aren't just having your old parts repaired. This is one way that mechanics can make a lot of money for the shop, and is a common scam that many consumers pay for each year.

By staying aggressive and making sure that the know what you want at all times, you will give them less reason to attempt to take advantage of you. If they think you mean business, they aren't going to try and talk you into something as you are going to be a far more difficult sell and will ultimately cost them more time and effort than it is really worth. So be aggressive, be focused, and make sure that you are constantly asking questions. It is your right to know, so take advantage of it.
