How to Customize a Car
The choice to customize a car, and to what level, should come down to what you want from the car. If your car is basic, cheap transportation to and from work you might be better off just leaving the car alone. Engineers at car companies spend a lot time designing the various systems in a car to make them work well together. If you bought the car because you thought it suited the purpose you needed it for, then you might be better off just leaving it stock. If on the other hand, the vehicle is not your primary transportation or maybe you bought it and your needs have changed, it might benefit it you to make some changes to the car. The third possibility is you bought a vehicle knowing that you would be likely to modify it.
Like anything there are varying levels of involvement a person can get into. A SUV that is used for hauling the family might benefit from a built in DVD player to keep the passengers occupied on longer trips. Would that same vehicle benefit from gaudy vinyl graphics on the side? Probably not. Customizing a car can make it really feel like your own creation, but if not done thoughtfully, a person can be creating their own headache. Lowering the suspension on a car might make it handle tighter in turns but it might also cause it to scrape on the ground every time you pull out of your driveway. Putting a lift kit in your truck for your occasional foray into the mud, might not be worth the loss in gas mileage and ease of entry for your wife and kids. The 22 inch rims you put on your Honda might look cool, but do you really want to have to dodge every crack in the road for fear of bending a wheel?
A person considering customizing their vehicle should really consider several things. What do I need my vehicle to do for me? A salesman who drives 50,000 miles a year probably doesn’t need a 8 passenger SUV that you could walk underneath. A carpenter might not want to give in to his wife and buy a new cute crossover SUV if he needs to fit 8 foot long plywood in it everyday. Another factor is why are you customizing the vehicle? If you just want to look cool and impress your son's friends when they come over, you might want to think about spending your money more wisely. If you really appreciate the beauty of an automobile and have a vision for your vehicle and can follow through with it and live with it when its done; you are doing it for the right reasons.
