How to Convert your Car to Run Ethanol
There has been a lot of talk lately about running cars on ethanol instead of gasoline; what you don’t hear much about is how to go about converting your existing car so that it can run on ethanol; it’s surprisingly easy.
First of all, for those that don’t know, ethanol is just another name for alcohol, the same stuff they use on your arm before giving you a shot. Ethanol can be made from organic matter such as corn, sugar or even dead apples. Also, most people don’t realize that virtually all cars made since the 1980’s are already able to run some degree of ethanol because most gasoline sold today, at least in this country, has some degree of ethanol in it. The problem comes about when you want to run on ethanol alone.
Luckily, there is a company that makes a device for doing just what you need. It’s called the Flex Tek, a little gadget that has been made and sold in Brazil for several years. Ethanol is a big deal in Brazil, as they have made getting off of gasoline a national priority for over a decade. The Flex Tek is government approved in Brazil, and the majority of the cars owned and driven in Brazil have a Flex Tek installed in them, as they run on pure ethanol, a product Brazil makes in abundance.
The Flex Tek works by altering the way gas is injected into the cylinders in your engine. This is necessary because ethanol takes a tiny bit longer to burn than does gasoline.
To install the Flex Tek, you first need to run the gas out of your car completely. Just drive it around till it’s mostly empty, then let it idle till it dies.
Next, lift the hood under your car and look for what are called the injector plugs. These are the places where the gasoline is pumped into the cylinders. To install the Flex Tek, all you do is remove one of the injector plugs, hook one of the connectors from the Flex Tek to the place where you just removed the Flex Tek, then insert the Flex Tek plug into the fuel injector. This all sounds very complicated, but in reality, it’s a rather easy process so long as your injector plugs are accessible.
You can of course simply buy the Flex Tek and have your local mechanic do it for you if you’re prefer.
Either way, once the Flex Tek is installed, all you need to do is fill your tank with ethanol, and you’re set to go.
