How to Choose the right Career
One of the biggest decisions that you will make in your lifetime is which career path to pursue. Some people will decide to pursue only one career path and they will stick to that career path for the majority of their lives. Other people will pursue more than one career path throughout their lives either intentionally or unintentionally. Choosing a career will impact many of your choices in your life such as where you live, how you live and how you will fund your lifestyle. It is important that you make career choices that make sense for you and that allow you to live the life that you feel is best for yourself.
When you are deciding which career choices you should be making, you need to first take in to consideration what type of lifestyle you want to live. Is it important to you to work close to your home or are you open to commuting at least an hour in rush hour traffic in order to get to your workplace? Do you want to be able to choose your own work hours or do you prefer having your work hours determined for you by a superior? Are you open to accepting jobs where you will need to frequently travel or are you adamant about working in your hometown because you dislike living out of a suitcase? All of these factors need to be taken in to account when making your career choices because some job positions will require that you travel, commute long distances to work and work specific hours. If you don’t like traveling than you probably shouldn’t pursue a job as a travel agent because many travel agents are well-traveled people who share their travel experiences and advice with their customers. If you dislike driving a car, then you should strongly consider pursuing jobs at workplaces that are close to your home.
In addition to considering what type of lifestyle you want to live, you need to determine what is important to you. If job security and receiving medical and dental benefits from your job is important to you, then you should pursue jobs at companies that seem secure and that provide well for their employees. Keep in mind that although certain companies currently seem secure, there is no guarantee that those companies will always be secure. With the current unpredictable state of today’s economy, many men and women are starting their own home-based businesses so that they could have more control over their careers. Some home-based businesses require that you complete training and additional education and others don’t require for you to do extensive training. It is important that you consider whether or not you will be able to dedicate the time required to educate yourself to pursue the career of your choice.
Having a university or community college degree is necessary in order to work in certain career fields like medicine, engineering and post-secondary education. Your education and what subjects you excel at and enjoy most should help you shed important light on which career path to pursue. If you enjoyed studying English literature in school, you should consider pursuing careers that involve using the English language and strong written skills such as media jobs. If you preferred studying Design And Technology courses in school, you should consider pursuing a career in carpentry or construction. No matter what career you choose, always remember that you are never “stuck” in your career. If you are unhappy with your career choices, you can always change your career and seek employment opportunities that will bring more balance and happiness to your life.
