How to change front rotors

The following information is a step by step instruction on how to change the front rotors of a vehicle in the privacy of your own garage or driveway. This type of project can be very costly when consulting a professional mechanic. Please be aware, if proper safety concerns are not taken into consideration, and heeded, this task can become very dangerous.

The first step is to park the vehicle being repaired on a level surface, if you do not have a garage area. Prior to starting this project, block the back wheels to ensure the vehicle will not roll anywhere upon beginning this process. Block rear tires in the front and back.

Second, find a secure spot on the undercarriage of the vehicle that will hold the weight of the entire vehicle. Preferably using a floor jack, place the head of the jack under the chosen undercarriage area. Loosen the lug nuts holding the front tires on the vehicle. After loosened but not removed, lift the vehicle until both tires are off the ground approximately two inches. Remove the tires, exposing the rotors.

Next, remove the braking system. The braking system, depending on the type, can be removed from the rotor, while still connected to the vehicle. Generally, after removed, the brakes can merely dangle behind the rotors, until the job is complete.

After that, remove the center cap, in most cases, located in the center of the rotor. This mechanism you are removing, is responsible for keeping the rotors in place on the vehicle's front axle. There are wheel bearings, a nut, and perhaps a pin holding the rotor to the axle. Replace the wheel bearing also, this saves dismantling again later, if there were faulty rotors on the vehicle, the wheel bearings most likely are worn unevenly.

Last, replace the rotor, reassemble and tighten everything according to the exact specifications used to tear-down. Assure every component is tightened accordingly. A loose rotor may cause a vehicle operator to lose a tire or a rotor containing tire, rim, and rotor while driving. When in the front, versus the rear, this can cause a loss of control of steering, resulting in a preventable accident.

Spin the newly replaced rotors, to ensure the rotors are turning "freely". If the rotors are too tight, there is a problem. The rotors with no brake system connected to them, should turn with minimal resistance. Please note, the brake system will need bled, upon reattachment to remove air trapped in the brake line, from dismantling. After reattaching and bleeding the brake system, reattach the tire while the vehicle is still raised off of the ground, as tight as possible, the wheel will turn. Once the vehicle is returned to all four tires resting on the ground, tighten all lug nuts, as tight as possible. If need be, stand on the arm of the four-way. Congratulations you know how to change the front rotors of an automobile.
