How to Apply Decals to a Vehicle

Applying decals to a vehicle enables a car owner to make a personal statement on a possession that is usually mass-produced by the thousands, and to apply decals to a vehicle is a fairly simple task. While there are plenty of custom auto shops that will perform the service for you, applying decals to a car yourself requires no special tools or skills, just a strong desire to enhance the look of your vehicle. The tools needed to apply a car decal are basic - a spray bottle filled with soapy water, a roll of paper towels, a squeegee, masking tape, a grease pencil and a yardstick or ruler. In most instances an average sized car decal can be applied in less than 30 minutes, and very few people find they cannot apply a car decal correctly with a good outcome. The most important factor in applying a car decal is to take your time and make certain that the decal is positioned properly because once the decal has been applied, where it is positioned is where it will remain.The first step to apply decals to a vehicle is to clean the surface where the decal where be placed, making certain that the surface is both clean and dry. After this, the precise location where the decal will be applied needs to be determined. While you may have a general idea, it is always a good practice to temporarily position the decal using a few small bits of masking tape to see how it will look when completed. When the decal has been properly placed and centered by measuring with your ruler, take your grease pencil and make a few small marks on the car around the outline of the decal to let you know where to place it when applied.After removing the decal and the masking tape from the car, it's now time to apply the decal permanently. Using your spray bottle filled with soapy water, spray the back of the decal and the place on your car where the decal will be applied liberally. Place the decal onto the car and slide it gently until it is in the proper position according to the grease marks you have made earlier. Take hold of your squeegee and run it over the decal to remove any excess water and then wipe the area surrounding the decal dry using a paper towel. Wait 30 to 60 minutes for the decal to adhere to the car and then remove the paper that the decal was attached to and your installation is complete.
